Before flying, it's important to know about sensitive facilities in your area. The portal helps you identify these locations.
Types of Sensitive Facilities
- Airports and Heliports: Both commercial and private
- Schools: K-12 schools and universities
- Hospitals: Medical facilities with helipads
- Prisons: Correctional facilities
- Power Plants: Nuclear and major electrical generation
- Military Installations: Bases and restricted areas
- National Parks: Many prohibit drone flights
- Stadiums: Restrictions during events
Viewing Sensitive Facilities
To see sensitive facilities on the map:
- Enable the "Sensitive Facilities" layer
- Icons will appear for each facility type
- Click an icon to see facility details and distance
Distance Calculations
The system can show distances from your assets or flight area to nearby sensitive facilities. This helps you:
- Plan safe flight paths
- Determine if notifications are needed
- Document safety considerations
Airport Proximity
When flying within 5 miles of an airport, special rules apply:
- May need to notify the airport/control tower
- Altitude restrictions typically apply
- LAANC authorization may be required
